In this episode, I discuss the story of the withered, or cursed, fig tree. Why does Jesus do this? When reading this story in Mark 11:12-14, I found myself asking God, "Help me understand what this means!" I believe He did just that right then! How does the sequence of riding in on a donkey as King, cursing the fig tree, and then clearing the temple courts play into the understanding of what happened to the fig tree? How does Jeremiah 7:11 and Jeremiah 8:4-13 help us understand what is happening to the fig tree? Is Jesus punishing the fig tree for not bearing fruit in a season when figs were not to be expected? What is Jesus really showing us in this teaching? How can Matthew 3:8 and Matthew 7:19 reinforce the idea of repentance and evidence of fruit? In faith, anything is possible. I pray this transforms and shines light on how you see this passage going forward!
